Description
On rare occasions in history, certain people or animals stand out from the masses. John Simpson Kirkpatrick is one such person. Initially a stretcher bearer, Simpson befriended a wild donkey and together they collected seriously wounded soldiers amid shrapnel and rifle fire. In 1997 the RSPCA posthumously awarded its Purple Cross to the donkey for outstanding acts of bravery towards humans.
