Born in Staffordshire, England, John Shorter came to Sydney in 1879 on business for Royal Doulton and stayed. Founded in 1884, John Shorter Pty Ltd, commonly known as Shorters, was an Australian Importing Agency for British ceramics firms such as Royal Doulton and Minton, and was the main Moorcroft account in Sydney from the 1950s onwards until their closure.
