Description
Emma’s Birdsong took inspiration from two gesso panels entitled Opera of the Sea and Opera of the Winds, designed by Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh, wife of Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1903. The red motives symbolise sound inspired by Opera of the Winds, the white birds are singing in flight, the trees are deeply steeped in Mackintosh imagery, while the moon is an overriding presence above a river winding its way to the sea.
